Turner Field Visit

This past Thursday our class visited Turner Field in Atlanta. The tour consisted of: The Coca-Cola Sky Field, Braves Hall of Fame Museum, Braves Dugout, Braves locker room, Scouts Alley, the broadcasting booth, Luxury suite, press box, the plaza and the Museum store. On top of touring all of those areas of the facility our tour guide also told us a lot of information concerning the field and facility. There are TV's everywhere in the facility so that you never miss the action. The field also has a special Hybrid Bermuda grass that doesn't die in the winter like normal Bermuda grass does. I found that really fascinating. Our tour guide also told us that the field's draining system pumps water off their field at an incredibly high rate that will pretty much allow the Braves to be able to play through any rain, except of course if it is a torrential down-pour. I loved the tour overall and I learned a lot of things about Turner Field that I did not know before.

We had a list of criteria the applicant had to meet, and things we would want to see in a potential employee: Education Degree (Bachelor's minimum in Communication or related field), playing experience (preferred, but not required), knowledge of game , communication skills, computer skills (for recording the statistics), commentary/announcing experience (list of references and experiences), social skills, Hours (what they are looking to work), Salary demands, and they must have some knowledge of the Rome Braves (for added insight into commentating and announcing).

Georgia Tech/ Georgia Dome Visit(s)

We recently went and visited the Georgia Tech Recreation Center. It was a very nice and huge facility that was very well kept and organized. It had a main floor with the lobby and main weight room with all the equipment you could ever need: Eliptical, treadmill, free weights, and more. They also had a number of indoor pools. Jonathan Hart was our tour guide and he told us all the construction that went into the Campus Recreation Center and all the problems they have had with it in the past. It was the home site for the Aquatics in the 1996 Olympics, but since then it has been expanded quite a bit. They added an entirely separate floor above the main floor of the facility with basketball courts and an indoor running track above those. There are also classrooms and workout rooms on the upper floor as well. I loved the facility and it is exactly the type of facility that I would love to own or operate in the future.

After that, we went to the Georgia Dome and took a tour of that facility. We went up to the press box/media room on the upper-most floor of the stadium, and eventually made it into the locker room of the Falcons =). We got a tour of the suites available for Falcon's games and also the area where the press and media get to sit and watch the game (which is on the 50 yard line). The last thing we did, after going into the Falcon's locker room and seeing their coach's offices and such, we actually got to walk out of the tunnel the Falcon's run out of and onto the field. It was an amazing experience for me and I really enjoyed the entire tour. The facility is one of the most amazing places I've ever visited.

Guest Speaker: Bob Pearson

Bob Pearson visited our class on October 28th and shared some of his great experiences with us and gave us a lot of tips to help us now and in the future. He is at Berry now and he is the head of the Department Chair of Kinesiology. At Berry he helped in training people that wanted to coach at the High School level, and he also taught and had 60+ students to advise. He passes us a handout with a lot of great quotes and sayings to go by in life. Here are a few of my favorite: "Your character is what you do when no one is looking" Winston Churchill, "No task is too small not to do well", and "The time is right to do what is right: M.L. King Jr. He also stressed how important it is to enjoy your job and anything else that you do in your life. I personally really enjoyed Mr. Pearson's visit and all the information that he gave us. It will all be very helpful in me pursuing my goals and even coaching.
